What to expect - How does competition BBQ work?

The public is more than welcome at the Morgan Hill No Bull BBQ Cook-off. You'll enjoy great music, vendor offerings, and of course the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the most dynamic gatherings of BBQ Pitmasters on the West Coast.

You can wander among the teams. Watch as they work the most intricate details of preparing their turn-in boxes for the judges. There's a lot at stake at the end of the day come awards time, so no detail is left out.

One word of caution though, the teams will be extremely focused while preparing their turn-ins. If they don't seem too welcoming at any time, please understand, and try again when they look a little more relaxed. They'll be more than happy to talk all you want.

Until then, be sure to visit the vendors area, enjoy the great music, or just watch the teams work their craft. Check out the vast variety of pit styles used in competition - everything from back yard pits to elaborate cook / sleep / live-in trailer pits. Maybe even consider joining the California BBQ Association - wont that look cool on your business card.

The Morgan Hill No Bull BBQ Cook Off is a national event sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS). This is the largest BBQ sanctioning body in the United States.

Peoples Choice - Taste competition quality BBQ.

Peoples choice is a unique opportunity to taste competition level BBQ cooked by true pitmasters. People who have dedicated years and untold time, effort, and toil to produce their best product for the judges - Peoples Choice is your chance to be a BBQ judge.

Here's how it works:

  • Peoples Choice hours are 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 7th.
  • You purchase some tickets - $10 gets you 5 tickets plus 1 'vote' ticket. Hang on to that vote ticket - it's not money, it's your 'best of the best' vote.
  • Take a ticket to the teams you want to taste a sample from. Note that not every team will participate - the local health department demands too much for many teams.
  • Give a Vote ticket to your favorite sample - You are the judge - taste, tenderness, logo, team name, creativity, whatever you want to base your vote on it's up to you - hand a vote ticket to your favorite team.

Other outstanding grill favorites that may be available

  • ABTs
  • Moink Balls
  • Pig candy
  • Chili
  • Brentwood Corn
  • There's no telling what these teams will come up with to temp you.

Pictures

So what's this thing likely to look like?

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words - there's
nothing like real pictures to illustrate what a BBQ Competition looks like. But what these pictures can't do, is convey the smells, the sounds, and the family fun friendliness of competition BBQ!

For that, you're just going to have to show up - see and smell for yourself! Hey, admission is free too.
